RMMS: New Summer Reading Initiative

Posted Date: 7/01/25 (2:45 PM)

Dear RMMS families,

As we approach summer break, we're excited to share our new summer reading initiative designed to keep your child engaged with books during the vacation months. Research says that students who  increase daily reading time to just 30 minutes can significantly improve comprehension and boost achievement. Students who read 30 minutes a day are exposed to millions more words than those who read less, which directly translates to a larger vocabulary and improved comprehension skills that benefit academic performance across all subjects.

We've created a comprehensive summer reading website that offers something for every reader. The site features book recommendations organized by genre, curated by our educators and high school librarians, along with engaging videos created by our 6-12 grade teachers sharing their favorite book picks.

Incentives to Read:

  1. Students who create their own 2-minute book recommendation video will be invited to an exclusive pizza party in September!  pizza party

  2. Students can earn paw prints by participating in the North Babylon Public Library's summer reading program, which offers its own exciting rewards, including a raffle for Adventureland tickets.

  3. For students seeking an additional challenge, we encourage you to explore the White House Summer Reading Challenge at https://www.whitehouse.gov/read/. This national initiative invites students to read 12 books of their choice between June 1st and September 5th. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate and prize, plus entry into a drawing to win a trip to the nation's capital with a chaperone.

These reading opportunities are suggestions designed to make summer reading enjoyable and rewarding. We encourage you to explore these options with your child and help them discover the joy of reading during their break. Whether they choose one program or combine several, the most important thing is that they continue to read and grow as learners throughout the summer.

Have a wonderful and book-filled summer!

Sincerely,

Ms.  Hasandras
